Setting: an Egyptian bedroom
(enter Si and Abby. They jump on the bed)
Si:
Ooh, Egyptian cotton! You can’t beat it, Abby.
Abby:
You’re not wrong there, Si.
(Si is clawing at the duvet)
Abby:
Stop clawing at the duvet. There’s no need to plump it up. The way that new slave makes the beds is just perfect.
Si:
Purr-fect! Good one! I guess you could say, he’s the cat’s whiskers!
Abby (politely ignoring the jokes):
Just settle down. I could do with a good catnap.
(Abby curls up)
Si:
He is good, isn’t he?
Abby (sleepily):
Who?
Si:
The new slave. What’s his name?
Abby:
Joseph.
Si:
Oh, yes. No wonder the master has promoted him so quickly. It won’t be long before he’s not making beds anymore. He’ll soon be too important to do all these menial tasks. I shouldn’t wonder if the master makes him…
Abby:
Si?
Si:
Yes, Abby?
Abby:
Be quiet. I’m trying to sleep.
(enter Joseph)
Si:
Oh, look, Abby. Here he is now. Abby? (Abby is asleep) Now, if you could just plump up that pillow over there by the window, I could curl up in the sun…
(enter Potiphar’s wife)
Si:
Uh oh. This could be interesting…
Potiphar’s wife:
Joseph! What a surprise to find you here.
Joseph:
Just doing my job, ma’am.
Potiphar’s wife:
Oh, leave it for a while. You work too hard. You must be tired. Come and lie down with me…
(She spreads herself on the bed, knocking off the cats)
Abby:
Mia-OW! Si, what’s going on? I was having a lovely…
Si:
Shh. It’s the master’s wife… and Joseph.
Abby:
Oh, not again!
(The cats crouch down out of the way)
Potiphar’s wife:
I’m waiting…
Joseph:
No, ma’am. That would be wrong.
Potiphar’s wife:
Oh, come on, Joseph. I know you want to really.
Joseph:
Believe me, ma’am. I really do not.
(Potiphar’s wife makes a lunge for Joseph. He evades her, but leaves his cloak in her hands. He runs off)
Potiphar’s wife (looking at the cloak and having an idea):
Guards! Guards! The Hebrew slave… he came in here and tried to take advantage of me… Guards!
(Potiphar’s wife exits)
Si:
Oh dear. That’s not good.
Abby:
What do you mean? He did nothing wrong.
Si:
Yes, but whose word is going to be believed – the master’s wife or a slave?
Abby:
Oh… good point. Who’s going to plump up our duvet now?
Si:
You’re right. I don’t think Joseph will be going anywhere near a duvet for a long time.
