Setting: the royal stables in Egypt
(enter Oti and Sancho)
Oti: It’s good here, in’t it?
Sancho: Uh?
Oti: In Egypt.
(there is a stony silence)
Oti: I’ve never been to Egypt before. It’s all … sophisticated.
Sancho: Huh!
Oti: What’s the matter with you, Sancho?
Sancho: In case it has passed your notice, Oti, we have just walked hundreds of miles. My hooves are killing me. And all you can talk about is how “sophisticated” Egypt is.
Oti: Well I’ve walked the same distance as you and I feel fine.
Sancho: That is because you were carrying Benjamin. I on the other hand got lumbered with Levi. There may well be a famine back in Canaan, but somehow he’s managed to pile on the pounds. No wonder they call him Levi Tubbs.
Oti: (ignoring Sancho) Well I like it here. And I must say that prince has been very hospitable.
Sancho: Governor.
Oti: What?
Sancho: He’s not a prince; he’s a governor.
Oti: Whatever. Anyway he’s been very generous. You know, there’s something about him. It’s almost like I’ve seen him before.
Sancho: What are you on about? You’ve just said you’ve never been to Egypt – how on earth can you have seen him?
Oti: Oh, I don’t know. Maybe he’s just got one of those faces.
(Sancho pulls a face)
Oti: And we don’t need one of your faces, thank you very much! (too audience) Ee-aw. ‘E always does that!
(enter servant. He bows to Joseph off stage and then places bags on Sancho and Oti)
Sancho: Oh, ay. Here we go again, Oti. Getting loaded up, ready to go. Oof! These bags are heavy. There’s more than grain in here.
Oti: You’re right, Sancho. There’s silver, too.
(servant places a silver cup in Oti’s bag. He walks to the back of the stage and then bows to Joseph off stage again)
Oti: And look! He’s just put a silver cup in young Benjamin’s sack! I told you that governor was generous.
Sancho: I don’t know. Seems odd to me.
Oti: Oh, stop it. Come on, let’s go!
(Oti and Sancho turn to go. Enter Joseph, standing next to his servant)
Joseph: Stop! No one is going anywhere. One of you has stolen my precious silver cup.
Oti: Eh? What’s he playing at?
Sancho: I told you there was something odd going on.
(Oti and Sancho turn and follow Joseph off stage)
