Setting: Madge is in her home (on stage). Jenny is at a microphone offstage.
Madge: (The phone rings.) Hello.
Jenny: Hello, Madge.
Madge: Hi, Jenny. How are you? What’s up?
Jenny: I called to see how things went today at the Crisis Pregnancy Outreach.
Madge: Oh, Jenny. I’m so glad you asked. I know that I’m doing God’s will by volunteering there, but sometimes I get so mad, I want to scream or just crawl into a corner and cry.
Jenny: You sound upset? Tell me about it.
Madge: Well, I had two clients today. Four if you count the unborn babies. But those girls certainly weren’t thinking of them.
Jenny: Madge, that is why you are there mentoring these girls. They are worried and scared and you are speaking for the babies who can’t speak for themselves. You help them remember the babies. So go on, tell me what happened.
Madge: Well, the first girl was real young, still in school and everything. I could tell she was scared. I talked to her about her options and showed her how adoption would be a loving choice for her and the baby, while making a waiting family very happy. They would even pay all the medical expenses.
Jenny: That’s great, Madge. What a marvelous gift to give to a childless couple. I know there are lots of couples waiting for a baby.
Madge: I think it's a great choice, too. But, you’ll never guess what the girl said.
Jenny: What did she say?
Madge: This really gets me. This girl is thinking about aborting her child. She seems OK with that. But when I suggest adoption, she says “Oh, I could never give my baby up for adoption.” I couldn’t believe it. Am I missing something here? She is willing to throw away her child, but horrified at the suggestion that she give it to a loving family. (Madge is getting louder.) What’s wrong with this picture?
Jenny: Calm down, Madge. You know these girls are not thinking rationally. That is why they are seeking advice. And they are pregnant, too. Surely, you remember how illogical you were sometimes, while you were pregnant. I know that your husband remembers. (Jenny pauses.) Madge, I hope that you didn’t yell at that girl.
Madge: No, no. I behaved lovingly and professionally on the outside. I tried to get her to think long and carefully about her choice, because it will be with her for her whole life.
Jenny: Good girl, Madge. What did she decide?
Madge: She said she’d think about what we discussed.
Jenny: Sounds like you might have saved a life. What about the second girl.
Madge: That’s the one that really got me. I mean, she was not in a crisis situation at all. She was just busy. She and her husband wanted a baby in two years, not now. So, they were considering aborting. They had good jobs, insurance, and everything. I don’t understand what they were thinking.
Jenny: It’s our society, Madge. It teaches that abortion is ok, because it is legal. They say it is not a baby. They say all sorts of lies. People don’t always know what is true.
Madge: Slavery was legal at one time. We all know that is wrong. Legal does not mean that it is ok.
Jenny: I know that, Madge. But everyone doesn’t understand that. They need someone to remind them. I trust that you did that lovingly.
Madge: Yes, Jenny. I shared with them about the beginnings of life and helped them to see that they were able to overcome any difficulties that may arise with their baby being a bit earlier than planned. I am so scared that they will make a bad choice and then look back with horrible regrets for the rest of their lives.
Jenny: Did you pray about it, Madge?
Madge: I haven’t stopped praying since I got home. They seemed like such a nice young couple. They just didn’t have a clue about the enormity of the decision they were making. Someday they will, but it may be too late.
Jenny: I’ll pray, too, Madge.
Madge: Thanks, Jenny. You always say just what I need to hear. I thank God for a good friend like you.
Jenny: It sounds like you were a good friend to those 2 girls today, Madge.
Madge: I tried to be. Bye, now Jenny.
Jenny: Bye, Madge.
(Madge hangs up the phone.)
