(Scene opens with Revival Pastor starting to preach and asking for those who’ve been seeking God for answered prayers)
Pastor: (very animated – such as old time southern pastors) Too often we go through life without. Why? Because we do not ask. The Lord says, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.” Matthew 7:7-8 What are you requesting of God today?! Come forward with your petitions!
Keaton: I’m seeking, sir!
Pastor: What do you seek, son?
Keaton: A car. I’ve been praying that God will provide me with a car.
Pastor: Hmmmmm. Can I see your driver’s license and insurance, son?
Keaton: Well I don’t have them yet – haven’t needed them.
Pastor: (pauses a moment to stare at the young man then walks over to Darla)
And what are you praying for, ma’am?
Darla: I’m praying for supplies and machinery to start up a quilting business so I can better support my family. You see that small house over there? That’s where we live.
Pastor: I see. And where’s your shed or working area?
Darla: Oh, I don’t have one yet. You see I haven’t needed the extra space so far.
Pastor: I see. (pauses to stare at her then walks over to Bill) And what are you asking of God, my son?
Bill: Rain – I need rain. My crops are dying because we’ve had no rain.
Pastor: And when do you expect it to rain, my friend?
Bill: Now! Right now!
Pastor: (pauses then looks at each of them slowly) And do you each believe God will answer your prayers?
All: One says “yes”, another says “absolutely”, another says “Of course” each talking at the same time.
Pastor: You are weak minded and have no faith! I do not believe that you believe!
All: We believe – really we do! We believe!
Pastor: You say you want a car yet have not prepared for it by getting a license and insurance. You want supplies to start a business yet you have no room to receive them. And you “believe” it will rain tonight, even now, yet have brought no umbrella to shield yourself from the downpour. Do not test God – for He knows your heart. For if any of you had truly believed he would have prepared in advance for the blessing he was to receive.
All: (walk away dejected, leaving child standing alone)
Pastor: And what is your purpose here child?
Child: (wearing a bike helmet, elbow and knee pads) I’ve been praying for a bike…
