(Setting: a field in Canaan)
(enter sheep)
Bartholomew: Morning Baa-rbara. How are ewe? Ewe – geddit?
Barbara: Oh, just leave it out, Baa-rtholomew.
Bartholomew: What’s the matter? Still feeling a little sheepish after last night?
Barbara: What do you mean?
Bartholomew: Walking off with all the others and then getting all tangled up in the briars… You were just following them like a sheep!
Barbara: But I am a sheep! And so are you. So I don’t know what you think you’re on about.
Bartholomew: Actually I’m a ram. I like to think of myself as knowing my own mind a bit more than you girlies!
Barbara: Like I said before, just leave it out, Baa-rtholomew.
(awkward silence between the sheep)
Bartholomew: Ay, ay! Look who’s coming.
(enter Joseph)
Barbara: Ooh, it’s that Joseph! He’s ever so handsome!
Bartholomew: Fancies himself, more like. Look at him in that coat. Who does he think he is?
Joseph: (preening himself) I look so handsome. I’m so smart. One day those brothers of mine will see who really is boss!
Barbara: Leave him alone. He’s special.
Bartholomew: Special?
Barbara: Yes, I’ve heard he’s had dreams that he is going to be a ruler one day.
Bartholomew: Dreams… pah!
Barbara: At least he’s not like his brothers. They’re such a rough lot.
Bartholomew: At least they’re honest workers. He’s a spoilt brat. He’s never done a day’s work in his life. I wonder what he’s doing here?
Barbara: Oh look. His brothers have seen him. They’re coming over.
(enter brothers)
Barbara: They don’t look too happy.
Bartholomew: I don’t blame them. He’s showing off all the time while they’re having to do all the work.
Barbara: Oh, Baa-rth… What are they doing now?
(brothers have crossed stage and have attacked Joseph, dragging him off stage)
Bartholomew: That’s right! Get in there, boys!
Barbara: Now look who’s acting like a sheep!
Bartholomew: But he deserves it!
Barbara: No one deserves to be treated like that. Now look, they’ve thrown him down a well!
Bartholomew: Oh that’s baad.
Barbara: You’re right. That’s very baad.
Bartholomew: So much for his dreams. He can hardly be a ruler from a well.
Barbara: Poor Joseph. What’s going to become of him now?
