In the Beginning...

By John Cosper Jr

Summary

An audience participation skit on the creation story from Genesis.

Characters

Script

[This skit works best with a large audience, as it requires a number of people to be pulled into the action and audience responses. Narrator One should be a male, and Two should be a female. They take turns telling the story and guiding the characters through the action Before the scene begins, the narrators pull twenty people out of the audience and have them lay on top of each other in a big pile. The narrators explain to the rest of the audience that they have one line in the skit. When the narrators say, 'And God said...' the audience responds with, 'It was good!']

ONE- In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth. Now the earth was without form. [point to the pile of people] Darkness covered everything, and the spirit of God hovered over the waters.

TWO- Then God said, 'Let there be light!'

[Pull one person off the pile and stand them on a chair, stage right.]

TWO- And there was light. God separated the light from the darkness.

[Hang a sign around the Light's neck that says 'Day'.]

TWO- He called the light day...

[Spin the Light around so he/she is facing away from the audience. Hang a sign over the Light's back that says 'Night'.]

TWO- And the dark night. And God said...

AUDIENCE- It was good!

[Spin the Light to face front.]

TWO- And there was the morning...

[Spin the Light to face back.]

TWO- And the evening. The first day.

[Spin the Light to face front.]

ONE- Then God looked over the waters.

[Pull three people from the pile to be the water. Have them sit at stage left in a row.]

ONE- And he said, 'Let there be an expanse to separate the water.'

[Pull one more person to be the 'Sky.' Make one of the Waters 'Rain' and the other two 'Sea.' The Rain stands on a chair, the Sky stands in front of the Rain with his/her arms out, and the Seas sit on the ground.]

ONE- And God called the expanse 'Sky' which separated the Rains...

[Have the Rains make a 'Sssss' sound.]

ONE- From the Seas.

[Have the Seas make a 'Whoosh!' sound and hand motions.]

ONE- And God said...

AUDIENCE- It was good!

ONE- And there was the morning...

[Spin the Light to face back.]

ONE- And the evening. The second day.

[Spin the Light to face front.]

TWO- Then God said, 'Let the water...'

[Have the Seas make a 'Whoosh!' sound and hand motions.]

TWO- 'Be gathered into one place, and let dry ground appear.'

[Pick one person to be 'Land.' Have the Land sit between the Seas.]

TWO- And God called the dry ground Land. Then he said, 'Let the land produce vegetation.'

[Pick two people to be 'Plants.' Have them stand behind the Land and pose like trees. Give them palm branches or leaves to hold out.]

TWO- And it was so. The land produced all kinds of plants, and trees, and flowers, and fruits, and vegetables, and other cool stuff. And God said...

AUDIENCE- It was good!

TWO- And there was the morning...

[Spin the Light to face back.]

TWO- And the evening. The third day.

[Spin the Light to face front.]

ONE- And God said, 'Let there be lights in the sky to separate the day from the night. Let them serve as signs to mark the days and seasons and years. And let them give light to the Earth.'

[Pick four people: one to be 'Sun', one to be 'Moon', and two to be 'Stars'.]

ONE- And it was so. God made two great lights. He called the greater light the 'Sun'...

[Hand the Sun a big yellow sun to hold up. The Sun stands in front of the Light.]

ONE- To light the day time. And he called the lesser light the 'Moon'...

[Hand the Moon a small half moon to hold up. The Moon stands on the Sun's right.]

ONE- To light the night. And since the moon was so small, he also made the Stars...

[Hand the Stars two small stars each. They stand on either side of the Sun and Moon.]

ONE- To help the moon light the night sky. And God said...

AUDIENCE- It was good!

ONE- And there was the morning...

[Have the Sun hold his/her sign. Then, spin the Light to face back.]

ONE- And the evening...

[Have the Moon and Stars hold up their signs.]

ONE- The fourth day.

[Spin the Light to face front.]

TWO- And God said, 'Let the water...'

[Have the water make a 'Whoosh!' sound and hand motions.]

TWO- 'Be filled with all kinds of living creatures. And let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky.'

[Pick two people to be fish. Have one cup his/her hands on their cheeks like goldfish fins and say, 'Bloop!' Have the other make jaws out of their hands like a shark and growl. The fish stand on either side of the waters.]

TWO- So God created every kind of creature under the water, each according to its kind.

[Pick two people to be a birds. Have both of them stand on either side of the fish and flap their arms. Have the first bird say, 'Caw! Caw!' and the other 'Tweet! Tweet!']

TWO- And he filled the air with birds, which he made according to their own kinds. And God said...

AUDIENCE- It was good!

TWO- And there was the morning...

[Have the Sun hold his/her sign. Then, spin the Light to face back.]

TWO- And the evening...

[Have the Moon and Stars hold up their signs.]

TWO- The fifth day.

[Spin the Light to face front.]

ONE- Then God said, 'Let the land produce all kinds of living creatures: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to their own kind.'

[Pick two people to be animals. NOTE: Make sure you leave one male and one female at the bottom of the pile for Adam and Eve. Put animals masks, noses, ears, (whatever is available) on the two animals and have them act like those animals in front of the Land.]

ONE- And so the land was filled with all kinds of creatures, like monkeys, and rabbits, and squirrels, and tigers, and oragutans, and hippopotamuses, and dinosaurs, and zebras, and camels, and frogs, and penguins, and chickens, and cockroaches. [aside] Yuck. And God said...

AUDIENCE- It was good!

ONE- Then God said, 'Let us make man in our own image, and let his be in charge of all the livestock, wild animals, birds, creatures in the sea, and all the land and waters.'

[Pick the remaining male to be 'Adam.' Have him lay on the ground.]

ONE- So God created man in his own image, forming him from the dust of the ground. And when he had finished forming him, God breathed into him the breath of life.

[Pick a girl from the audience to 'breathe life' into Adam. Adam stands up.]

ONE- God named the man Adam, and God said...

TWO- Wait!!!! It wasn't quite good enough. You see, even though he had dogs and cats and all the other animals, Adam was lonely because he didn't have anybody to talk to! So, God put Adam into a deep sleep.

[Adam lies back down, asleep.]

TWO- And he took a rib out of Adam, and from that rib, he formed the most beautiful creature in all of creation. And her name was Eve.

[Have Eve stand up.]

TWO- And when Adam woke up, he took one look and said...

[Adam stands up. Hand him a cue card which says...]

ADAM- Whoa, man!

[Hand Eve a cue card which says...]

EVE- Tell me about it, stud!

TWO- And God said...

AUDIENCE- It was good!

TWO- And there was the morning...

[Have the Sun hold his/her sign. Then, spin the Light to face back.]

TWO- And the evening...

[Have the Moon and Stars hold up their signs.]

TWO- The sixth day.

[Spin the Light to face front.]

ONE- And on the seventh day, God looked at all he had done. He saw the sun, moon and stars.

[Sun, Moon, and Stars hold up their signs.]

ONE- He saw the waters.

[Have Seas and Rains make their sound effects.]

ONE- He saw the creatures of the sea.

[Have the fish make their fish noises.]

ONE- He saw the birds of the air.

[Have the birds make bird noises.]

ONE- He saw the land and all the creatures on land.

[Have land animals make animal noises.]

ONE- And he saw Adam and Eve. [yawns] And God said...

AUDIENCE- It was good.

ONE- No, actually, this time he said, 'Gee, I'm tired.' So God found a nice, quiet spot, and laid down for a nice long nap.

[Two pulls out two pillows and throws one to One.]

ONE- And on the seventh day, God created rest.

TWO- And God said...

AUDIENCE- It was good!

TWO- Good night.

ONE- Good night.

[One and Two collapse on each other with their pillows and go to sleep.]
